Coconuts are known for their versatility of uses, ranging from food to cosmetics. The inner flesh of the mature seed forms a regular part of the diets of many people in the tropics and subtropics. Coconuts are distinct from other fruits because their endosperm contains a large quantity of clear liquid, called coconut milk.
The outer coat along with the coir is separated from the shell. The nut is often sold in the market as a very important cooking ingredient in Indian Kitchens.
The outer coat with coir is called the coconut husk. It is the rough exterior of the coconut. The natural elastic fibre extracted from coconut is used to make rope and coir strings. Coconut husks fiber is the main raw material used to produce floor mats and wall mats, brushes, mattresses, ropes and other handicrafts too. The whole dry husks are used as fuel.
This husk is soaked in water and beaten to extract the fibre. Once the fibre is extracted, you get a dusty material that has a 4mm to 6mm particle-size material called cocopeat.
This cocopeat material has various great qualities, one of them being its good capacity to hold water because of its air-filled porosity (AFP). Also, cocopeat has a very stable PH that helps to make a great medium for plants.
Cocopeat is a renewable material and India produces 21,500 million tons of nuts annually.
